ASIAN PACIFIC FEDERATION

Inaugural Meeting of the Asian Pacific Federation
Working Group 2 on Waterfowl held during the 4th World Waterfowl Conference on Friday
13 November 2009 at the Lulu Convention Centre, Thrissur, Kerala, India.

A report on the inaugural meeting

Mr Alan Gibbins, President of the Asian
Pacific Federation acted as chairman. He welcomed everyone to the meeting and
thanked them for their attendance. He then outlined the circumstances leading
to the inauguration of the federation’s second working group; WG2 on Waterfowl.
He explained that the European Federation had closed its working group (WG8) on
Waterfowl because the waterfowl industry and the research effort in that region
had diminished and there were not enough people interested in waterfowl to
sustain a viable working group there. The EF made the suggestion that the group
essentially be “transferred’ to the Asian Pacific region. This proposal was put
to the APF and agreed to. After some initial discussions with colleagues in the
region it was decided that APF become involved in the 4th World
Waterfowl Conference and hold an inaugural meeting of the new APF WG there.

Officers, Terms of reference, Objectives
etc were discussed but only briefly and it was decided by the meeting that
these items be carried over to a meeting during the next Asian Pacific Poultry
Conference which is to be held in Taipei, Taiwan in March 2011.

It was also thought appropriate that the new
WG assume responsibility for future World Waterfowl Conferences and that it
should be the body to select the host country for the next World Waterfowl
Conference (the 5th). This decision should be taken at the meeting
to be held during APPC in Taipei. Notice
of this intention will be circulated to each APF branch with instructions to
follow if contemplating bidding for the 5th World Waterfowl
Conference. This will be actioned by Mr Gibbins.

An interim committee was formed from
attendees at this meeting who recorded their interest on a list circulated at
the meeting (see Table 1 below). Added to the committee are two other people
who had earlier expressed interest in being on the committee and one who was
recommended to me by a member of the board of WPSA, Prof Ning Yang from China.
(see Table 2 below)

Thus on Friday 13 November 2009 the Asian
Pacific Federation Working Group 2 on Waterfowl was inaugurated.

There were no other discussion points, so
the meeting was closed.

The interim
committee is made up of those names in Table 1 who are part of the Asian
Pacific Federation plus the three who expressed an interest earlier plus Dr
Wezyk who should be invited on in an advisory capacity, to arrive at a
committee comprising the names in Table 2. This table also leaves space for
delegates from APF branches not already represented. The final makeup of the
WG2 committee should be determined at a meeting held during the 9th
APPC in Taipei in March 2011. Elections may need to be held to bring in wider
representation from other APF member branches but also to keep the total number
of committee members to an optimum. This is also something that can be decided
in Taipei.

The name Ediati appears in Table 1. This name was
on the original list but it had no accompanying address or country.
